Have you ever wondered why ranchers feed their cattle grains for a few weeks before selling them? They eat grass all year for free. Why spend the money? It's because every rancher knows, if you want to fatten an animal up and increase the price, you feed it "healthy whole grains".
I was overweight at age 27, and worked out minimum 12 hrs a week.
Now at age 47, staying lean is still the easiest thing in the world. I don't count calories, I don't do endless "cardio" and I only work out twice a week on average. (Life is crazy, sometimes it's only 3 workouts the entire month)
Despite all my years of study, and effort to eat the healthiest foods, at 27 I was wondering If I was going to have to abandon my passion... Rock Climbing. I felt like crap and my elbows felt like they were going to explode when I did any kind of 'try hard'. I picked up a book on diet, something new, and I started to realize that half the things I had learned were Backward! So I started from scratch and started studying harder than ever to figure out how to sort through what I knew down to the smallest possible scale.
Did you know that whole wheat bread has a higher glycemic index that a snickers bar, or even a spoonful of pure table sugar? The primary carbohydrate in wheat is Amylopectin-A, which is easier to digest than table sugar. Yes, your whole wheat sandwich will spike your blood sugar faster and higher than a snickers bar. That blood sugar needs to stay at about 1 teaspoon in your entire circulatory system, so the pancreas releases Insulin to tell your liver to turn all that extra sugar in your bloodstream into fat where it can be stored in a non-toxic form. (plants are made of carbs aka sugar)
Here's part of where the calories in calories out model starts to really fall apart. Insulin puts you in fat storage mode for about 4 hours. It shuts off access to your fat stores since you can't be burning fat and storing it at the same time. (and because you've got loads of sugar to burn) So run all you want after your carbs. You have turned off your ability to burn fat.
How is the mitochondria affected? HOW? I drilled down, corrected my errors, and tossed most of the b.s. I had been handed as a child.
When I figured out what I was doing wrong, I dropped 20 pounds in 4 weeks and fixed my aching joints. I could try hard again without that screaming elbow pain! I was able to get back to flexing full with full effort :D
Looking back I was not just eating the wrong "healthy foods" I was also being sloppy. Being a struggling entrepreneur money was tight, so the question was, "whats high protein and cheap?" I felt like I had to choose between $ and peak health.
I didn't realize I was looking at everything the wrong way! I was asking the wrong question. "What does the healthier option cost?" NO! The question is "AM I WORTH THE HEALTHIER OPTION?"
I was losing climb time and dealing with unnecessary pain to save a couple bucks. (And spending extra in the end on Ibuprofen)
I've never been interested so much in Living long, I want to Live Well!
I do Not want to simply exist day after day watching everyone else live and MOVE. Maybe i'm wrong, but to me, Movement is Life. I don't want to live a long time, I want to PLAY a long time!
To me being able to stay active, and keep learning and laughing is priceless.
